I applied moisturizer and my face felt irritated and hot. Is this an allergic reaction? Should I stop or continue?

What is a moisturizer?

First, let’s get to know about

moisturizers. This type of skincare is a product that has been developed to increase moisture to the skin to reduce and prevent dehydration, dryness, peeling, itching, or irritation. There are many textures such as cream, gel, lotion, wax, etc. Each has a different mechanism of action. Some help nourish the skin to be soft, help coat the skin to reduce water loss, or restore the skin’s protective barrier to absorb and retain water in the skin, making the skin still moist, smooth, ยูฟ่าเบท and healthy.

My face feels irritated after applying moisturizer. What causes this?

Despite its many benefits, sometimes after applying moisturizer, I feel a burning sensation on my face. This problem can mostly be caused by 3 reasons:

  • Skin irritation due to skin condition

When our skin is very dry, when applying moisturizer, we feel a stinging sensation that is shocking, along with concerns that we may be allergic. But the truth is that our skin condition at that time is weak, so the skin barrier is not strong, causing a stinging sensation when applying moisturizer, even if it is our favorite skincare product that we use regularly. This stinging sensation will not last long, and will disappear in just a few minutes.

  • Skin irritation from irritation

If you have been using acne medications such as Tretinoin or Benzoyl Peroxide for some time, you may experience irritation, dryness, and peeling of the skin. When applying moisturizers that are moisturizing, you may feel more irritation on the skin, but these symptoms will disappear soon.

  • Skin irritation from allergies

If you apply moisturizer many times and it still stings your face and the symptoms remain for a long time, plus you have a red rash on your skin, itchy skin, dry and flaky skin, it may be caused by an allergic reaction to that cream or moisturizer. If the allergy is severe, it may even cause inflammation. The best way is to study the ingredients of the skincare product before trying it.

How to fix when applying moisturizer

Then my face gets hot.

Now that we know the reason why your moisturizer makes your face sting, let’s look at how to fix it appropriately.

1. Stop using it first.

If you are not using acne medication or products containing AHA/BHA and you experience burning, itching, and even after a while, this symptom persists, it means that the moisturizer you are using contains an irritant. Wash it off and stop using it immediately. So

what is BHA ?

2. Choose a gentle moisturizer that nourishes your skin.

For the cause of dry and weak skin, the solution is simple: continue to apply moisturizer, but choose one with ingredients that help soothe the skin, such as Aloe Vera, Niacinamide, Ceramides, Allantoin, etc.

To help relieve the burning sensation, it also contains ingredients that help strengthen the skin’s protective barrier. Add a facial mask to moisturize the skin. Once your skin has adjusted, you can apply skincare products the next time without worry.

3. Avoid ingredients that may cause irritation.

Some ingredients in moisturizers can irritate the skin and cause an allergic reaction, causing a burning sensation on the face. Therefore, you should avoid ingredients such as alcohol, color, fragrance, or excessive acids such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), glycolic acid, retinoic acid, salicylic acid, which have exfoliating properties. It should also be oil-free, non-comedogenic, and hypoallergenic.

4. Test the product before use.

An easy way to test for allergic reactions to moisturizers is to apply a thin layer of the product to one side of the forearm twice a day, morning and evening (applying to the same spot every time) for 3 consecutive days or increase to 7 days to be sure. If a rash, swelling, redness, or itchiness appears, you can stop using it because you may be allergic to the cream. Never apply it to your face.

After applying moisturizer, if your face feels irritated, it may not always be an allergic reaction. But sometimes if we let our skin dry out, lack water, or do not take care of our skin to keep it healthy, these problems will follow. Therefore, we should take care of our skin early on, including choosing a gentle moisturizer that is suitable for our skin type, free of irritants, so that our skin will be full of water, bouncy, and healthy for a long time.
